Anyone been to the Cotswolds?
Coming back to the UK for a month a doing a 4 day trip with my girlfriend (American) so going to take her to some lovely places around England. Does anyone have any recommendations for where to stay in the cotswolds? Ideally looking to stay in a Ye Olde Pub with a BandB upstairs type of place. So many bloody options on the internet so no idea. We just want to have a nose around the villages in the day times and drink some beers in a nice pub and eat some good food in the evening. I don't really care about the sightseeing, so the boozer is most important to me!

Re: Anyone been to the Cotswolds?
Just remembered when I went to Stroud, a big fat ugly bloke with a West Ham tattoo down his forearm walked into Wetherspoons.

Who off here was it?

He was wearing a blue and yellow Henleys t-shirt, if that narrows it down.

The Red Lion in Cricklade is definitely worth checking out - outstanding beers and proper ciders, very good food, characterful pub and pretty village with good road connections. Am not the landlord.

I have spent a lot of time in Stroud. Many nights spent at The Vic, The Fleece and the Retreat.

It's a town full of....er, "characters".

Dont even know where this is, nor do I care.

Very rare for me to leave the seven boroughs of east London and if I do its to go to Islington.

Rest of England is packed to the rim with freaks and weirdos.

Re: Anyone been to the Cotswolds?
I'm originally from the Cotswolds. There are lots of villages around the Cirencester area. Barnsley, South Cerney, Ampney Crucis, Lechlade, Buford etc.
Most have your typical village pub. If you visit South Cerney - go to The Old George Inn.

Hope this helps.

Oh, and if she likes shopping, Bicester Village is a must, particularly with the $ being so strong at the moment.

Re: Anyone been to the Cotswolds?
I've got a friend in Moreton-in-Marsh who I've been to stay with a few times. Lovely place with a number of excellent pub and some good restaurants (lovely Indian, plus most of the pubs do food), but more a small town than a cosy village. It becomes a proper touristy place when the market is on, with tons of coaches turning up and parking on the main street.

Went to Stow for an afternoon once, that's pretty and again lots of good pubs and places to eat. I guess you've got to do Bourton-on-the-water once while you're there as that really is your quintessential picture postcard Cotswold village, but it's a bit like a theme park in that 99% of the people you see will be there for the day and it's difficult to comprehend that anyone actually lives there.

Re: Anyone been to the Cotswolds?
You might want to look at a pub called the Ebrington Arms. Nice rooms, decent pub and good food. Not cheap, but what it does better than most is mix the destination 'pub' idea with a place that the locals go into. Some evenings they have decent music in the small bar.

The village is a couple of miles from Chipping Campden which generally charms the yanks, its another ten miles or so to Stratford Upon Avon if you want to tick that box.

If you're not driving the nearest station is Moreton in the Marsh on the Paddington-Worcester line.

I liked Stroud, unfortunately didn't see much of it, the countryside around there was great though but the roads seemed very crowded, this was at the end of summer.

Its not the Cotswolds but if you're after a few days away in the future, you can do a lot worse than Devon/Cornwall in the summer. Lots of little "hidden" beaches miles from anywhere which will likely be empty and are just as sandy and hot as a lot of places abroad.

Re: Anyone been to the Cotswolds?
There's tetbury as well - down the road from highgrove. Closer to bath there's also Bradford in Avon (don't be out off by the name) but bourbon ir stow are probably your best bets.

Lots of the places in the Cotswolds aren't necessarily full days out,l as they are quite small, but there's a fair few near bourbon as well. Plus there's the Cotswold animal park too, which is lovely.

Sudeley castle is impressive if you like that sort of thing as well
